Biathlete Varis faces life ban threat

Finnish biathlete Kaisa Varis tested positive for the blood booster EPO, the International Biathlon Union said Thursday.

The IBU had said that "prohibited substances" were found in her "A" sample, taken after an event in Oberhof, Germany, on Jan. 6. The IBU announced the finding after testing her "B" sample.

Five days after the event, Varis won her first biathlon World Cup event in Ruhpolding.

As a cross-country skier, Varis was stripped of a relay gold medal at the 2001 world championships when teammate Virpi Kuitunen tested positive for doping.
