Arsenal back on top as United scrape draw

Emmanuel Adebayor maintained his prodigious recent scoring rate with two more goals as Arsenal went to the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win at Manchester City in the early kick-off on Saturday.

And Arsenal ended the day with a two-point lead over Manchester United, who snatched a last-gasp 1-1 draw away to Tottenham after falling behind to Dimitar Berbatov's 21st-minute opener.

Third-placed Chelsea lost further ground on the leaders as Portsmouth debutant Jermain Defoe cancelled out Nicolas Anelka's 55th minute strike to earn a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park.

Togo international Adebayor scored in the ninth and 88th minutes as Arsenal inflicted a first home league defeat of the season on Sven-Goran Eriksson's City.

Adebayor's strike partner Eduardo put Arsenal 2-1 ahead after 26 minutes but the two-goal buffer was shortlived as Gelson Fernandes replied within two minutes.

Arsenal's held on comfortably enough during the second goal but sealed victory as the excellent Cesc Fabregas set up Adebayor for his second near the finish.
