Wings' ageless wonders Chelios, Hasek fly after 40

DETROIT — On the day Chris Chelios renewed his contract with the Detroit Red Wings last summer, he rode his bicycle from his home in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., to the downtown Joe Louis Arena

For those who know the veteran defenseman, his decision to undertake an hour-long bike ride through traffic comes as no surprise. He turned 46 Jan. 25, yet with teammate Dominik Hasek, who turned 43 Tuesday, he is a testament to durability.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock loves to talk about how the Wings "don't put people out to pasture too early," which is a way of saying: Look at Chelios and Hasek and their impact on the team's success. Hasek is among the NHL's best goaltenders, and Chelios remains a master penalty killer and irritates opponents like few others. As San Jose Sharks coach Ron Wilson put it recently, when you go into the corner with Chelios, he's going to punch you in the head.
