Engineer admits guilt for ice rink disaster

A civil engineer standing trial Monday acknowledged miscalculations in the construction of an ice rink that collapsed two years ago, killing 15 people, mostly children.

But two other defendants -- the head of construction and an architect -- insisted they were innocent as their trial on charges of manslaughter and negligence opened in southern Germany.

The rooftop ice rink collapsed on January 2, 2006, in the Bavarian town of Bad Reichenhall. Fifteen people were killed and 36 injured.
