Akhil Kumar on Friday became the second boxer from India to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. Akhil made the cut by moving into the final in the 54kg category of the Asian boxing championships at Bangkok.
Akhil beat Ryom Chol Jin of People's Republic of Korea. The contest was stopped by referee in the third round, and Akhil will now meet Athens Olympics silver medallist Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand.
There was disappointment, however, in store for three other Indian pugilists — Amandeep (48kg), Dinesh Kumar (81kg) and Manpreet Singh (91kg) — who failed to make it to the Olympics by losing their respective semi-final bouts, according to information received here.
