An overwhelming ovation from the 84,000 crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground notwithstanding, retiring Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist on Friday left the ground heart-broken as he broke his favourite bat in the Twenty20 international against India.
Gilchrist broke his bat during his knock of 25 off 22 balls and even though it's a common occurrence in any batsman's career, the left-hander has more reasons than one to rue its loss.
Among the many memorable knocks he notched up with this bat, Gilchrist's hurricane 149 in the World Cup finals last year against Sri Lanka at Barbados, which won his team the third successive title, stands out.
It was also the bat with which Gilchrist recorded the second fastest century in Test cricket history, a 57-ball miracle that he affected on England in the Perth Test last year.
The reception to Gilchrist at the MCG was overwhelming by all standards.
Every little thing he did at the ground, gathering ball or catching one at the fag end of the Indian innings or striking a four in the first over of Irfan Pathan, everything Gilchrist did was cheered by the fans.
